Food Safety License Registration in India – An introduction
- FSSAI License is mandatory for Food Business Operators engaged in various activities like manufacturing, procurement, processing, storage, packaging, distribution, and sales of food products.
- There are different types of FSSAI Licenses based on the size and nature of the business, including Basic Registration, State License, and Central License.
- Businesses such as food chains, hotels, wholesalers, retailers, dairy processors, food importers/exporters, processors, suppliers of raw materials, canteens, and packaged food manufacturers must register with FSSAI before commencing commercial activities.
- Every eligible Food Business Operator is issued a 14-digit Unique License Number by FSSAI, which must be prominently displayed along with the FSSAI logo on their brand labels, packages, and business premises.
- FSSAI License ensures adherence to quality, standard, and hygiene norms prescribed by FSSAI, and is valid for either 1 year or 5 years, requiring renewal before expiry.
- Operating without a valid FSSAI License is a legal offense, punishable by fines up to INR 5 lakh and/or imprisonment for up to 6 months. Various penalties also apply for non-compliance with quality, standard, and hygiene norms specified by FSSAI.
- Fine of INR 2 lakh for State/Central License holders and INR 25,000 for petty manufacturers for quality of food.
- Fine of INR 5 lakh for misbranding.
- Fine of INR 3 lakh for substandard food products.
- Fine of INR 1 lakh for misleading advertisements or wrong food descriptions.

Documents Required for FSSAI Registration
1. Photo of the Food Business Operator
Submit a clear photo of the Food Business Operator.
2. Government-issued Photo ID
Provide a government-issued photo ID, such as AADHAAR, PAN, Voter ID, etc.

Submit proof of the business activity address if it differs from the address stated in the Photo ID card.
Registration Process for a Food License
STEP–1) Guidance and Information Collection for FSSAI License
We will review your requirements and eligibility for the FSSAI License based on the documents and information you provide. Essential data such as license period, desired fees, and business details must be submitted. We will guide you through the process and ensure a hassle-free experience. Once satisfied and equipped with all necessary data, we will proceed with Application Drafting.
STEP–2) FSSAI Application Drafting
Depending on your Food Business type, size, and funds, we will select the appropriate application form, such as Form A for Basic Registration or Form B for State and Central Level Application. We will complete the application, attach the required documents, and ensure its correctness through interaction with you. Finalization will only occur upon your approval.
STEP–3) Application Submission and Status Update
Your application will be submitted to the Food Safety and Security Office (State/Central) along with necessary documents and Registration Fees. The application will undergo an initial check for validity, and you will receive a response of acceptance or refusal within 15 days. Additional information/documents may be requested, and based on your response and validity, you will be accepted or refused for Physical Inspection.
STEP–4) Physical Inspection
Upon submission of your application to the concerned Office of Food Safety and Security Standard, an Application ID will be issued to you. Subsequently, a Physical Inspection will be conducted to assess your business location and processes. Ensuring compliance with FSSAI standards is crucial during this stage to avoid objections or rejection.
STEP–5) License Procurement and Delivery
Following successful completion of the Physical Inspection, your License will be issued within approximately 30 days. However, if the Physical Inspection Report is unsatisfactory, your application may be disapproved. We will deliver the license to you once it is collected from the Department of Food and Safety Standard.
STEP–6) CONGRATULATIONS!!
With the legal permit obtained, you are now authorized to operate under the provisions of the FSSAI License.
